Who we are and what we do
LWIC is the biological record centre for the Lothians.
The Centre provides an objective independent information service,
providing a 'one-stop shop' for wildlife information for users
from all sectors. It provides a focus for biological recording and
is working to increase knowledge of the wildlife of the Lothians.
LWIC is the focal point for recording and access to biodiversity
data within the Lothians. The Centre seeks to hold as comprehensive
a record of the wildlife of the Lothians as possible, although the
data held by the Centre will remain in the ownership of the
originators. There is an assumption of open access to these data,
unless there is evidence that there is potential for damage to
wildlife resulting from release of data.
The Centre provides a wide range of data services; we routinely
supply data to local authorities for screening planning applications,
consultants preparing environmental assessments and conservation
bodies preparing management plans.
